Applications
Examples of content management solutions for different applications.
- Business Web Site
- A content management system (CMS) is an ideal solution for a company's marketing website or an organization's information website. News, events, the company profile, contact information, product and service descriptions, case studies and other content can be easily updated and maintained by non-technical users. Responsibility for different sections can be delegated to the department or team which owns the content, allowing the web master to focus on the site's design, functionality and reliability.
- Company Intranet
- A CMS is an excellent tool for an organization to communicate with employees and collect business knowledge. Management can publish goals, plans, and policies, while individual departments can publish operational documents, performance metrics, news and events. Project teams could publish their deliverables and project managment documents, and workgroups could practice continual improvement.
- Customer or Supplier Extranet
- A private CMS accessible through the public internet is an excellent communications tool between a company and it's customers and suppliers. Companies working with partners would find a CMS ideal for collaborating on joint projects.
Custom Applications
- Collaboration Portal
- A CMS can be used as a community portal to enable collaboration and communication. Especially useful for teams with geographically diverse members, and with tools such as forums, blogs, syndication (RSS) and wiki's available.
- Management System
- A CMS can be used to implement and automate a business management system that meets the requirements of the international ISO standards such as Quality Management (ISO 9001), Environmental Management (ISO 14001) and OSHAS 18001 (Health & Safety Management). All of the elements of an ISO registered management system such as goal setting, planning, measurement and monitoring, document control, auditing, and continual improvement can be implemented in the CMS.
- Business Process Automation
- An organization that contracts external professionals to research and write case reports could use a CMS to build a report management application. The professionals would log into a secure website to write and submit their reports using a custom report template. Support documentation could be uploaded and linked to the report (spreadsheets, images, PDF's). After submitting their report, workflow is used to notify supervisors that they need to review the report. The supervisors would attach comments directly to the report, and workflow would be used to either return it for revisions and re-submission, or approve it. The process for individual reports or all reports could be monitored and managed to ensure timeliness, completeness and other goals are met.
